You could be flushing important information about your health right down the toilet—quite literally. Pee and poop can tell you a lot about your health, so what if your waste…didn’t go to waste? What if, instead, it could tell you more about your health? Like number one, it can catch a condition like diabetes early. Or number two, check out what’s going on in your gut microbiome.
That’s the goal of the smart toilet—a device that gets all up in your business to tell you more about your health. Ira talks with the inventor of the PH Smart Toilet, Dr. Seung-min Park, instructor of urology at Stanford’s School of Medicine in California, about how the toilet works, how it can be used to catch diseases early on, and the ethical implications of such a device.

“잠에서 깨면 가장 먼저 가는 곳이 화장실이잖아요. 매일 반복해 간다는 건 그곳에서 일관된 데이터를 얻을 수 있다는 뜻이기도 합니다. 스마트 변기로 수집한 데이터에서 건강을 읽어내는 거죠.”
박승민 싱가포르 난양공대(NTU) 교수는 조선비즈와의 전화 인터뷰에서 “머지않아 화성에서 정밀 건강이 구현될 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다”며 “이르면 2029년 화성에서 스마트 변기와 같은 정밀 건강 시스템을 볼 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
"심지어 스마트 글래스(안경)도 저희 랩에서 개발을 하고 있습니다. 뭘 먹는지에 대해서 다 기록을 하고 단백질 같은 영양소 섭취량까지 계산하는 알고리즘도 만들고 있습니다. 스마트 변기와 연동해서 생태계를 만들게 되면 먹는 것부터 나오는 것까지 심리스(seamless·끊김 없음)하게 만들 수 있다고 보고 있습니다."
박승민 싱가포르 난양공과대학교 교수는 20일 서울 강남구 코엑스(COEX)에서 열린 '메디컬코리아 2025' 기자 간담회에서 이와 같이 말했다. 이 자리에는 최근 생성형 AI 도입을 추진하고 있는 에모리 헬스케어의 알리스테어 어스킨 CIO(최고정보책임자)도 함께했다.

박승민 교수도 결국 스마트 기기를 통해 건강 관리를 하게 될 것으로 전망했다.
박 교수는 "윤리적인 부분에서도 문제가 지적되고 있지만, 스마트 기기를 활용해 상시 감시가 가능하도록 발전하고 있다"라면서 "스마트 변기가 그중 하나로 매일 채혈을 할 수 없다 보니 변을 통해 관리를 하도록 하고 있다. 나사와도 업무를 진행 중이며 일론 머스크의 화성 탐사에서도 건강관리는 결국 스마트 기기로 진행하고 있다"고 설명했다.
박승민 교수는 디지털 헬스케어 분야의 확장 방향성에 대해 환자의 생활과 진단 등이 거대한 생태계를 이룰 것이라고 내다봤다.
